Block 336, the new artist-led gallery announces its inaugural exhibition: ‘1’, opening on 23rd of March, 6 pm – 10pm, 336 Brixton Road. The show, ‘1’ will feature recent work including that from the five Block 336 resident artists and eight invited artists, who work in the fields of drawing, painting, film and sculpture.
Block 336 will be a platform for emerging and established artists who work across a range of disciplines. As a not-for-profit organisation Block 336 will promote engagement and critical discussion of contemporary art and ideas through its program of exhibitions and events. Block 336 is also partnering with local charities and other institutions to offer their ‘Access to Art’ Program.
Block 336 occupies the basement of 336 Brixton Road which is a classic example of 1960’s ‘Brutalist’ architecture. The building was a computer centre for Coutts Bank until 1979. It was then taken over by illegal ravers before becoming managed by the Lambeth Accord Charitable Trust. Block 336 has transformed the largely unused basement into a 450 square meter exhibition space, studio space to accommodate artist residencies, workshops and the production of site-specific projects. The space retains elements of redundant technology such as the computer cooling system, which gives a unique sense of character and offering a variety of curatorial possibilities.
The Private View for the exhibition ‘1’ will take place on the 23rd March from 6 pm – 10 pm. The exhibition will run from: 23rd March – 13th April 2012. Block 336 is located at 336 Brixton Road, SW9 7AA, a short walk from Brixton Tube Centre, the vibrant Brixton Village and the O2 Academy.
